What is a Chief Marketing Officer?
The CMO owns the entire marketing P&L: brand, demand generation, product marketing, communications, and growth. At seed and Series A companies, the role is operator-heavy and often functionally equivalent to Head of Growth. At Series C and beyond, it skews toward team leadership, narrative, partnerships, and external presence. Strong CMO candidates have a proven category: SaaS B2B, consumer apps, fintech, or marketplaces. They've built and led a marketing org of 10+, owned a number that mattered to the board, and have the trust capital to push back on a CEO when the brief is wrong.

About Chief Marketing Officer careers
What does a CMO do?
Owns the full marketing P&L: brand, demand gen, product marketing, comms, and growth. Reports to CEO. Sits on or presents to the board. Manages a marketing org of 5-50+.
What's the typical CMO salary range?
In the US: $230K-$450K base. With equity, total comp often hits $400K-$1M+ at well-funded scale-ups. Public-company CMOs typically earn more in equity than base.
How long does it take to become a CMO?
Most CMOs have 12-20 years of marketing experience, with 5+ years as VP or Head of Marketing first. The fastest path is operator at a hyper-growth startup β title compression is real.
Is CMO different from Head of Growth?
Yes. CMO is broader (brand, PR, analyst relations, partnerships); Head of Growth is more performance and full-funnel. The two merge at smaller companies.
