What is a Head of Growth?

The Head of Growth role sits between marketing, product, and data. They own the funnel — acquisition, activation, retention, monetization — and are accountable for the metric the CEO checks every Monday. Most companies that hire one are between $1M and $50M ARR, scaling past founder-led growth. Strong candidates have 5-10 years of operator experience, a proven channel they can scale (paid, SEO, lifecycle, partnerships), and the ability to make a hire on day 30 and a roadmap on day 60. The biggest signal is past P&L responsibility, not the title on the previous role.

Frequently asked

About Head of Growth careers

What does a Head of Growth do?

Owns the growth function end-to-end: acquisition channels, activation, retention, and monetization. Reports to CEO or CMO. Manages a team of 2-15 people across paid, SEO, lifecycle, and analytics.

What's the typical salary for Head of Growth?

In the US: $140K-$280K base. With equity and bonus, total comp typically lands $200K-$450K. Higher in SF/NYC, lower in remote-only or smaller-stage companies.

What skills do you need to become Head of Growth?

Operator experience in at least one channel you scaled to material revenue (paid, SEO, lifecycle, partnerships). Comfort with SQL or analytics tools. Hiring and team-building. Strategic thinking under ambiguity.

How is this different from CMO?

Head of Growth is more performance-focused, full-funnel, often product-led. CMO is broader: brand, PR, comms, sales enablement, analyst relations. In smaller companies the two roles merge.

Is Head of Growth a senior role?

Usually yes — most postings require 5-10 years of experience and prior people management. A small subset of seed-stage startups hire 'Head of Growth' as a first growth hire with 3-4 years experience.
