The Challenge

Airwallex is a $8B payments platform serving 200K+ global businesses. As Data Science Director for Growth, you'll architect the experimentation and AI engine driving their next hypergrowth phase—owning everything from A/B testing to agentic workflows that unlock step-function improvements in acquisition, activation, and monetization.

Your Mission

First 3 Months
1

Audit current experimentation framework; design and socialize scalable A/B testing + multi-armed bandit infrastructure

2

Build and hire core DS team (3-5 ICs); establish team rituals, tech stack, and growth science operating principles

3

Launch 3-5 high-impact experiments across activation and conversion with clear impact on product roadmap

4

Define success metrics and baseline KPIs for growth funnel (CAC, activation rate, LTV, payback period)

By 6 Months
1

Deploy ML-driven personalization engine (embeddings + recommendation models) into product for lifecycle messaging

2

Build first agentic workflow—automated campaign generation or sales assistant bot—live and driving incremental revenue

3

Scale experimentation cadence to 15+ concurrent experiments; establish causal inference capabilities for complex questions

4

Present quarterly growth science roadmap to executive team with $XXM revenue impact forecasts and team expansion plan

KPIs You'll Own

Monthly Active Experimentation Velocity

Number of concurrent, statistically valid experiments running; target incrementally from current baseline to 20+ by month 6.

Growth Funnel Metrics (CAC, Activation Rate, LTV)

Track acquisition cost, % of users completing key activation events, and 12-month LTV; measure impact of DS-led initiatives.

AI Solution Adoption & Revenue Lift

% of users exposed to personalization engine, agentic workflows, and segment-based messaging; measure incremental revenue attribution.

Team Throughput & Capability

Number of production ML models deployed per quarter; on-time delivery of experimentation requests from product/marketing.

Tools & Stack

Python (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)A/B testing & experimentation platforms (Statsig, LaunchDarkly, or in-house)SQL & data warehousing (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)BI tools (Tableau, Looker, Mode)Multi-armed bandit & causal inference libraries (Bandit, DoWhy)LLM/GenAI frameworks (OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain)Personalization engines (Segment, mParticle, or custom embeddings)Collaboration & analysis notebooks (Jupyter, Databricks)

Is This Role For You?

For You If
  • You've led a data science or analytics team (3+ people) at a B2B SaaS or fintech company and shipped models to production
  • You're fluent in experimentation design, causal inference, and ML—and can code (Python) and debug your own ideas
  • You thrive scaling teams and mentoring engineers; you get excited building culture and defining best practices
  • You have founder-like energy: you move fast, ship early, and balance rigor with pragmatism; you use AI tools to amplify your leverage
Won't Work If
  • You're primarily an academic or researcher; you need perfect data and months to publish vs. shipping working solutions in weeks
  • You require remote flexibility; this role is on-site in San Francisco, no exceptions
  • You've never shipped a live ML model or led through a hypergrowth phase; you lack the operational muscle for a scaling fintech
