The Challenge
Instacart moves hundreds of millions in marketing spend annually, and they need you to build the data foundation that powers every dollar allocated. You'll own the metrics, models, and infrastructure that Data Scientists and Analysts depend on to drive growth across Paid, SEO, and Retailer Marketing.
Your Mission
Audit current marketing data models and identify 3-5 high-impact areas for refactoring or optimization
Establish and document analytics engineering standards (code review, testing, modeling patterns) for the marketing data org
Design and implement a semantic layer or metrics layer to reduce analyst friction and standardize KPI definitions
Build trust with Data Scientists and Marketing stakeholders by delivering one critical data asset with full documentation and monitoring
Migrate existing marketing models to a scalable dimensional architecture (fact/dimension tables) using dbt
Implement comprehensive data testing and monitoring-unit tests, integration tests, freshness alerts-across all production marketing models
Lead technical leadership initiative: establish code review cadence, mentor junior analytics engineers, and raise modeling standards across team
Partner with ML/AI teams to build curated datasets that enable predictive marketing models and reduce time-to-insight

Model Test Coverage
Percentage of analytics models with comprehensive unit and integration tests, targeting 95%+ coverage.
Query Performance (P95 Latency)
Median query execution time for core marketing dashboards, measured in seconds.
Data Freshness SLA
Percentage of marketing datasets meeting their refresh SLA (e.g., daily, hourly).
Analyst Self-Service Rate
Percentage of marketing analytics requests that analysts can fulfill without engineering support.
Model Documentation Completeness
Percentage of production models with complete, up-to-date documentation (purpose, lineage, business logic).
