This Senior Engineering Manager leads a talented group to develop environments, automated platforms, and solutions that enable the design, simulation, physical implementation, test, and verification of embedded systems. Visibility is high as this group supports the needs of the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) R&D organization, along with other R&D organizations across the Medtronic enterprise that leverage the environments this group develops and maintains within its scope. The group consists of highly skilled, experienced, and engaged design automation, hardware, and software engineers / technicians, along with various contractors.

Key Areas of Focus for This Position

Alignment to Medtronic Leadership Expectations for People Leaders:

  • Shape: Sets strategic direction, owns investment outcomes and value propositions, and leads the implementation of engineering design environments that are used in design and development of Medtronic’s industry leading medical device products or software systems
  • Engage: Work across the enterprise and matrix within various businesses to maximize the utilization and increase the leverage of our investments in our design environments. Work with a large variety of vendors to identify and develop strategic partnerships that provide value for our organization and engineering stakeholders
  • Innovate: Work with key stakeholders across the enterprise, and our vendors, to lead the development of new design and test methodologies. Be a key thought leader and influencer in the future of electrical design automation and embedded system environments
  • Achieve: Develop the organization by increasing overall competencies in design methodologies, business acumen, vendor relationships, and responsiveness to stakeholder needs across a variety of design environments
  • Partner with like organizations and stakeholders across the enterprise to drive operational excellence in embedded system environments as a competitive advantage for Medtronic by increasing engineering productivity, predictability, design fidelity, and overall quality of outcomes

This position is in Mounds View, MN. within the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) operating unit. A Day in the Life

This role of

Senior Engineering Manager

is expected to have responsibilities in both project management and people management, as well as individual contributions as an SME. The broad, collective responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the development, and execution, of embedded system environment strategies that enable future breakthrough system innovation which continues to redefine the industry for patients, providers and payers in clinical performance, quality and patient outcomes.
  • Work with stakeholders and business partners to develop roadmaps that define strategic outcomes that enable innovation, fidelity, and efficiency. Drive outcomes across organizational boundaries.
  • Working with stakeholders and partners across Medtronic, execute on functional excellence improvements to our embedded system environments and methodologies that advance our enterprise-wide aspirations in design, reliability, development efficiency, and flawless launch. Drive outcomes across organizational boundaries.
  • Ensure availability of any required design environments, in advance of need, to enable the execution of product development portfolios across the enterprise
  • Aligned with strategies developed above, lead the purchase and deployment of various equipment and software assets to meet embedded system design and verification demand across the enterprise. Annual budget includes $8M in expense and >$500K in capital
  • Maintain productive working relationships with various vendors; lead negotiations on license and maintenance renewals working closely with our Strategic Sourcing and other R&D and IT partners across Medtronic
  • Current scope of responsibilities includes the following design environments: Electrical Design Automation (EDA), Embedded System Emulation, Automated Realtime Test Stations, and End-to-End System-level Continuous Integration
  • Responsible for staff of >17 engineers / technicians, which includes contractors
  • Coordinate flexible resource deployment (people, equipment, etc.) with stakeholders and advance the overall competencies of the staff to meet future demands

Qualifications –

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, systems or biomedical engineering, and minimum of 7 years of work experience with 5 years of managerial experience OR advanced degree in mechanical, electrical, systems or biomedical engineering with 5 years of managerial experience.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a regulated industry, preferably with medical devices
  • Experience working with industry (preferably medical electronics) regulators, regulations, and standards, including an understanding of how to interpret and apply requirements to product and process
  • Experience with multitasking and leading multiple quick turn initiatives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross functional team
  • Experience planning and leading projects and using tools such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$168,800.00 - $253,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
