The Challenge
Notion is redefining how millions work. As a Growth Engineer, you'll design and ship experiments that move the needle on activation, retention, and expansion—working with a product used by enterprises and individuals globally.
Your Mission
Ship 3-5 high-impact growth experiments (A/B tests on onboarding, feature adoption, or activation flows) and establish baseline conversion metrics
Build repeatable experimentation infrastructure: test framework, analytics dashboards, and decision-making playbook for the team
Identify and deeply analyze top 3 growth levers (viral loops, self-serve expansion, or paid acquisition ROI) specific to your cohort
Establish weekly growth rhythm: experiment reviews, learnings synthesis, and hypothesis prioritization with cross-functional partners
Compound 2-3 experiments into sustained retention or expansion wins (target: measurable 3-5% lift in core north-star metric)
Lead full-funnel analysis: map critical drop-off points across acquisition → onboarding → activation → expansion and own one funnel stage
Scale one high-ROI channel or loop to 10%+ incremental impact on growth target (revenue, DAU, or retention—your choice based on business priority)
Build growth playbook: documented decision framework, experiment taxonomy, and learnings library that scales team decision-making
KPIs You'll Own
Weekly Active Users (WAU)
Primary north-star for measuring product engagement and sticky user base growth
Activation Rate
% of new signups who hit key aha moment (e.g., created first workspace, invited collaborators) within 7 days
Retention Cohort Curves
Day-1, Day-7, Day-30 retention by sign-up cohort to measure product stickiness and experiment impact
Paid Expansion ARR
Revenue from existing customer account upgrades or workspace expansion—key for land-and-expand SaaS motion
Experimentation Velocity
Number of validated hypotheses shipped per sprint; measures how fast you iterate to learning
Tools & Stack
Your Team
Your Manager
VP Growth or Head of Growth Engineering (likely reporting to CPO or Chief Growth Officer)
Current Team
2-4 other growth engineers, product manager, data analyst, designer—small nimble team

Is This Role For You?
- You've shipped 3+ growth experiments that moved measurable business metrics (retention, expansion ARR, DAU) at a B2B or B2C SaaS company
- You're fluent in SQL, product analytics platforms (Mixpanel/Amplitude), and statistical thinking—you can answer your own questions from data
- You thrive in ambiguity: minimal process, high ownership, fast iteration. You're comfortable being wrong in public to learn faster
- You understand B2B2C dynamics or land-and-expand models—Notion's motion is nuanced and you want to crack it
- You've collaborated closely with product, design, and engineering to ship—you're not siloed in growth
- You're a marketer first, growth second. This is engineering-heavy: SQL, APIs, data pipelines, scripting. If you're not hands-on with code, you'll struggle.
- You need process, clear direction, and 2-week sprints. Notion operates async and in small teams—high ambiguity is baseline.
- You're chasing vanity metrics (pageviews, impressions, MQLs). This role demands rigor: validated experiments, statistical significance, user behavior obsession.
Interview Process
Recruiter screening
30 min. Confirm growth experience, technical depth (SQL/analytics), and mission alignment.
Growth case study
60 min. Walk through a past experiment you led: hypothesis, metrics, execution, learnings. Expect deep dives on methodology.
Product deep dive + data challenge
90 min. Analyze Notion's product from a growth lens. Design a 3-month experiment roadmap. SQL/analysis challenge on sample dataset.
Team conversations
2-3 x 45 min chats with Growth Manager, Product Manager, Data Analyst. Explore cross-functional fit and how you'd operate.
Executive chat
30 min with VP Growth or CPO. Discuss strategy, vision, and your ambition.
