Accountabilities
- Assess the existing brand, product offering, website, social presence, and previous marketing activity to identify opportunities and gaps.
- Define primary and secondary audiences and translate assumptions about customer behaviour into clear, testable hypotheses.
- Develop a practical audience-growth, content, and storytelling strategy aligned with the brand's objectives.
- Establish repeatable content pillars, formats, platform strategies, and publishing rhythms.
- Identify opportunities across organic social media, creators, authors, publishers, reading communities, collaborations, events, referrals, and user-generated content.
- Explore ways to connect digital marketing with real-world activities, events, and community-building initiatives.
- Develop the website as a broader platform for content, SEO, email acquisition, audience development, and customer engagement.
- Design and execute focused marketing experiments using realistic budgets and clearly defined objectives.
- Establish meaningful success metrics covering both audience and commercial outcomes.
- Analyse experiment results, identify what is and is not working, and adjust strategies based on evidence.
- Help operate and continuously refine the marketing system, with increased involvement during launches, campaigns, events, and growth experiments.
- Advise on how limited marketing resources should be allocated to generate the greatest impact, insight, or learning.
- Build a structured test-and-learn approach that supports sustainable audience and customer growth.
Requirements
- Currently based in South Africa.
- 2-3 years of relevant, recent experience in digital marketing, audience growth, content strategy, community building, or a closely related field.
- Strong understanding of how different audiences behave across digital platforms, demographics, and online communities.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing content, community, audience-growth, or digital marketing strategies.
- Comfortable combining strategic thinking with hands-on execution when required.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to test ideas, interpret performance data, and turn findings into practical recommendations.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to work effectively with limited marketing budgets.
- Strong understanding of brand storytelling and how it contributes to audience engagement and business growth.
- Curious, adaptable, and comfortable working with an evolving early-stage brand.
- Willingness to challenge assumptions constructively and change direction when evidence indicates a stronger approach.
- Strong ownership, independence, and organization when working in a flexible freelance environment.
- Ability to demonstrate measurable results through relevant case studies or previous projects.
- Experience with audience growth, community development, content strategy, or digital experimentation is particularly valuable.
- This role is not intended primarily for social media scheduling, maintaining content calendars, producing posts without strategic context, creating basic visual assets without a broader growth plan, chasing trends indiscriminately, optimizing primarily for follower counts, or treating virality as the main commercial objective.
- Candidates should be comfortable developing an approach specifically for the brand rather than applying a rigid, pre-existing marketing formula.
